Solar Labels NEC 2023
NEC 2023 Solar Labels for Photovoltaic Systems (Article 690)
The 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC) Article 690 establishes updated labeling and identification requirements for photovoltaic (PV) systems to improve electrical safety and hazard recognition. These NEC 2023 solar warning labels and photovoltaic safety labels are used throughout solar installations to clearly mark energized circuits, disconnecting means, rapid-shutdown systems, and PV equipment. Proper labeling helps electricians, inspectors, and emergency responders quickly identify electrical hazards and understand the configuration of a photovoltaic system before servicing or operating equipment.
NEC 2023 requires permanent, visible labels on key PV system components, including service equipment, inverters, disconnect switches, and wiring methods containing DC conductors. For example, conductors and enclosures carrying PV power must be marked with identifiers such as “Photovoltaic Power Source” and remain visible after installation, helping prevent dangerous electrical shock hazards during maintenance or emergency situations.
The 2023 code cycle also clarified labeling requirements for rapid-shutdown systems, moving these markings into Section 690.12(D). Buildings with PV systems must include a permanent label indicating that the system is equipped with rapid shutdown and identifying the location of the shutdown initiation device so emergency personnel can quickly de-energize the system if necessary.
PV Labels offers durable NEC 2023 photovoltaic warning labels designed for code-compliant solar installations, built for long-term visibility in demanding indoor and outdoor environments. These high-visibility safety labels help ensure clear hazard communication for solar equipment and electrical systems, supporting safer photovoltaic installations and helping installers meet current NEC labeling requirements.
